Chapter Three: Karma Yoga — The Yoga of Selfless Action

The third chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, known as Karma Yoga (The Yoga of Selfless Action), addresses Arjuna’s confusion about whether knowledge or action is the higher path. Lord Kṛṣṇa explains that no one can remain inactive even for a moment, for all beings are compelled to act by their nature, and therefore renunciation does not mean abandoning work but offering one’s actions without attachment to their results. He teaches that selfless duty performed as a sacrifice sustains both individual spiritual growth and the harmony of society, pointing to great exemplars who acted for the welfare of the world. By warning against desire and ego as the true enemies of wisdom, Kṛṣṇa establishes Karma Yoga as a disciplined way to purify the heart, master the senses, and progress toward liberation while fully engaged in one’s responsibilities.
